Where is the school located?

The Arts Academy is located at 1610 E. Emmaus Avenue, Salisbury Township, Pennsylvania, 18103.

Who is eligible to attend?

All Pennsylvania-registered school children are eligible to attend the Arts Academy.

Will there be busing?

Busing will be provided for students from most surrounding school districts. The law requires that the border of your town must be within 10 miles of the actual school. If you live outside of the 10-mile radius, you will have to seek your own form of transportation. If you are eligible to bus, the local district will arrange your child’s transportation and decide on pick-up and drop-off times, not the Arts Academy.

When does school start?

The first day of school changes annually, please refer to the school calendar.

Our school days begin at 7:45 a.m. and end at 2:45 p.m.

Will the school have a strong academic curriculum?

The Arts Academy meets or exceed state academic standards. This is measured by annual standardized state tests as per state guidelines. Our goal is that every student will succeed in a rigorous academic program. A full year of high school foreign language will be mastered during grades 7 and 8. Language offerings include French and Spanish. Our academic staff are fully certified.

Does the school provide special education services?

AACMS meets the needs of students with IEPs, as well as those with 504 plans. Our Special Education Coordinator works with specialists and our Special Education teaching staff to meet the individualized needs of our students. Our Guidance staff coordinates and looks after the needs of students with 504 plans. We do request that students with these individualized needs provide the proper paperwork at the time of application.

How will the artistic curriculum be evaluated?

We meet and exceed state and national artistic standards. This is measured by outside experts in the respective artistic areas. Our artistic staff are fully certified and/or high-quality professionals in their respective fields.

How does the audition process work?

The documents required prior to the interview are vitally important! You must bring copies of your child’s birth certificate, proof of residency, and latest report card to the interview. A report card review is also part of the audition process in order to better plan for the academic program and needs for the student. NO student will be denied due to his or her grades, but not having the required paperwork will mean we cannot conduct the interview properly.

The prospective student and his or her parents or guardians will meet with a staff member for an interview of approximately 15 minutes in length. The student will be asked to explain their interest in and background in the three artistic areas that they indicated on the application. Although the students are young, we anticipate that each applicant will present some talent at the audition/interview. Students may sing, dance, act, bring a drawing or show a video for this part of the audition. The presentations need not be formal, but some preparation is recommended.

Students will be evaluated on a 10 point matrix. Up to 4 points will be awarded for experience and training, while up to 6 points will be awarded for interest and enthusiasm toward the arts. The points will only be used in the event that we are over-enrolled in a particular grade or artistic area.

We can accept:

  • Any student with disabilities with an interest and/or ability in the arts.
    Any student who is academically challenged or in need of special services.
    Any legal resident of Pennsylvania.

We cannot accept:

  • Out of state residents until they establish legal state residency.
    Students who have been expelled or repeatedly suspended from school.
    Students with NO INTEREST in the arts.

When will I know if my child is accepted?

Notifications will go out by the end of April. If your child interviews later in the spring or summer, expect a response within 2 to 3 weeks. Once a letter of acceptance is sent, parents must reply with written acceptance of enrollment or risk losing their child’s spot. While accepting enrollment does not legally bind your child to attend our school, it is an indication that you have given the matter serious consideration and expect to do so barring unforeseen circumstances.

What will a typical day be like for students at the Arts Academy?

Dependent upon grade level, students will spend two or three periods per day in specific artistic instruction, with the remaining periods in academic coursework. Lunch will be approximately 20 minutes each day. 5th and 6th graders will have their artistic instruction in the afternoon, while 7th and 8th graders will have their artistic instruction in the morning. If students are in need of additional academic help, they will be provided this during the artistic portion of their day.

Is lunch provided by the school?

AACMS does participate in the federal Free and Reduced Lunch Program, and we have an outside vendor provide hot lunch for our students.  Students may also bring lunch.  Beverages are available for purchase, as well.
