Dance
The highly qualified dance instructors of AACMS’s Dance Department provide their talented students with a variety of challenging dance technique and history classes, meaningful performance experiences, and an appropriate sense of health and attitude. Over their four years at AACMS, Dance students receive instruction in a variety of dance styles—including ballet, modern, jazz, contemporary, tap, and musical theatre—while also studying strength and conditioning, improvisation, dance composition, dance in world cultures, and dance history.
Curriculum
Fifth Grade
Our fifth grade dance workshop provides an introductory level dance class focusing on teaching the basics of jazz, ballet, and modern dance styles. Students also prepare a piece to perform in the annual Fifth Grade Arts Showcase as part of the workshop class.
Sixth Grade
All sixth grade dance students learn and develop fundamental dance technique through participation in ballet, and modern dance classes. Primary dance students also participle in jazz dance classes, strength and conditioning for dancers, and dance in world cultures, while secondary dance students study musical theater dance. All primary and secondary 6th grade dancers perform in the dance department’s annual showcase, Innovations.
Seventh Grade
Seventh grade dance students continue to develop foundational techniques in ballet, modern, and musical theater dance styles. Primary Dance students also study jazz and tap dance, dance history, and explore their personal movement style in the safe and supportive environment of structured improvisation classes. All primary and secondary 7th grade dancers perform in the dance department’s annual showcase, Innovations.
Eighth Grade
Eighth grade dancers refine their dance technique through ballet, jazz, modern, tap, contemporary, and musical theater classes. Utilizing skills learned in improvisation classes, they learn the art of choreographing in their dance composition class. The eighth grade dance distory class focuses on the world of modern dance and how it applies to them as an artist. All 8th grade dancers perform in the dance department’s annual showcase, Innovations.
Performances & Showcases
The AACMS Dance Department’s annual showcase, Innovations, takes place each spring and showcases primary and secondary dance students in grades six, seven, and eight. Fifth grade dancers participate in the annual Fifth Grade Arts Showcase. Dance students also perform in various community events throughout the school year.
